Sehr geehrter Herr!
Der scharfsinnigste und vollständigste Versuch, alle Erscheinungsformen
der Energie auf kinetische Energien zurückzuführen, ist in der Hertz'schen
Mechanik gegeben. Beweisen lässt sich da nichts, sondern höchstens zeigen,
dass die Auffassung widerspruchslos möglich ist.
Der Versuch scheitert an der Erkenntnis, dass Masse und kinetische Energie
keine Fundamentalbegriffe sind, indem ponderable Masse nur eine Ansammlung
von Energie ist. Der Begriff der Energie ist aber sicher fundamentaler als
der der Masse und kinetischen Energie. Ich glaube, dass der Begriff des Feldes
der fundamentalste von den von uns bis heute aufgestellten ist. Aber viele
vorsichtige Physiker sind gegenwärtig nicht dieser Meinung.
Diese paar Worte eines Überbürdeten mögen einstweilen genügen. Sicher ist nur,
dass jede Generation von Denkern die früheren als naiv belächelt, um dann
später dem gleichen Schicksal teilhaftig zu werden.

The educated and entire attempt to investigate all manifestations of the energy
for kinetic energy is given in the Hertz's Mechanics. Nothing can be proved in these works,
but it does show that this perception is possible without contradiction.
The attempt fails because of the recognition that mass and kinetic energy are not
fundamental, while ponderable mass is only one aggregation of energy. The idea
of the energy is more basic indeed than that of the mass and kinetic energy. I believe
that the concept 2 of the field is the most basic of all defined by us till this day.
But presently many careful physicists are not of this opinion.
These few words of an overburdened man may be enough for a while. It is for certain
that every generation of thinkers, smile at the former thinkers then later to
face the same destiny.
